Abidjan Convention: Experts finalize key protocols

Experts from the countries of Africa’s Atlantic seaboard on Wednesday agreed on three additional draft protocols to the Abidjan Convention, paving the way for their examination and approval by ministers from the Convention’s States Parties at their meeting on Thursday and Friday.

They also agreed to amendments to the Abidjan Convention [full name: Convention for Cooperation in the Protection, Management and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Atlantic Coast of the West, Central and Southern Africa region] signed in 1981, ratified in 1984 and amended once since then.[See more]

Time for blue economies in Africa, Abidjan Convention Executive Secretary says

Abidjan, 28 March 2017 - The need to link the protection and conservation of the marine environment with sustainable development and improved livelihoods for local communities was highlighted when specialists from five continents began meeting on Monday 28 March in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, at the Expert Segment of the 12th Conference of the Parties to the Abidjan Convention.

Addressing the meeting, the Executive Secretary of the Abidjan Convention, Abou Bamba, noted that this year’s Conference marked a break with the past, when the focus was on conservation without necessarily mainstreaming the development needs of the population of West, Central and Southern Africa. Abidjan set to become the epicenter of the ocean debate in late March

Abidjan March 10, 2017 - Abidjan is set to become the epicenter of the debate on the Southeast Atlantic ocean and adjoining coastal areas from 27 to 31 March, when Parties to the Abidjan Convention meet for their 12th Conference. The event’s importance was highlighted by Côte d’Ivoire’s Government and the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) at a joint press conference in Abidjan on Thursday 9 March.

“The 12th Conference of Parties is a major event in the life of the Convention,” noted the Convention’s Executive Secretary, Mr. Abou Bamba. “It will mark the end of the Convention’s revitalization phase. You could say that it will signal a new start, a new take-off”. Read More
